Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if we already have a tape backup system?
Tape backup is a convenient way to store data, but it has several inherent flaws. Tapes must be in good condition and must be replaced regularly, they are limited in size, they are often unencrypted, and in order for them to be effective, multiple versions of tape backups must be stored offsite every single day. The Netriplex Remote Backup system automates this entire procedure.

Q: How long will a remote backup take?
Businesses with high-speed internet connections should find this service comparable with tape drives. Dial up users will be able to do incremental backups in thirty to sixty minutes. The initial backup can take several nights to complete. We recommend backing up the most important files first and then selecting other files as the backup progresses. Or, the initial backup can be run over the weekend. If you have a substantial amount of data to backup (over 30GB), you can also perform the first backup to CD-ROMs. We will transfer your CD backup onto our backup system so that subsequent online backups will be smaller incremental changes or additions.

Q: Onsite, Offsite - What's the difference?
Basically, remote backups work much like regular tape backups, but with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or other media attached to the computer being backed up, a remote backup sends encrypted file data to the Netriplex remote file storage system safely offsite. This usually happens at night while your business is closed and nobody is using the computers. It's completely automated including email notifications detailing successful completion after each backup.

Q: Why are remote backups considered more beneficial?
The data is immediately stored offsite using an automated backup system. Also, only an internet connection is needed, completely eliminating the need for expensive backup equipment, media and software. And, since the system is automated, the time and cost of manual labor is eliminated. Thus, automated remote backup actually PAYS for itself in saved time and labor.

Q: How secure are remote backups?
Extremely. All files are encrypted before they leave your computer using your choice of eight of the strongest cryptographic methods in the world used by banks, governments and large corporations. You set and control everything including your own personal encryption code so only you can decrypt your data. In fact, the system is so secure that Netriplex staff can't even access your data because you hold the key.

Q: What is encryption?
Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles a data file. The only way to unscramble it is with the encryption code. It is somewhat comparable to paper document shredding, except infinitely more thorough, yet reversible with the encryption code.

Q: Where will my files be stored?
Your encrypted files will be transferred via the internet to our secure servers at our Maximum Security Data Centers which are protected by onsite security and restricted access. We utilize a state-of-the-art SAN (Storage Area Network) and redundant storage components to ensure the security, accuracy, and availability of your data at all times.

Q: How often will my computer or file server be backed up?
As often as you like since you control how frequently your computer links up with our Data Centers. Most of our clients backup nightly, but some do so more often.

Q: How much data can I backup?
As much as you want. You will be charged based on the actual amount of compressed data that you store. It's all explained in our pricing plan.

Q: Do I need any special equipment or software to use Netriplex remote data backup?
All you need is a computer running any recent version of Microsoft Windows (95, 98, Me, XP, NT 4.0, or 2000), an internet connection, and about 1 GB of available disk space. As part of our service, we provide you with the backup software you'll need.
